Navantia’s History

Navantia has been operating in Australia since 2006, and since that time have grown our footprint and our local workforce. We are now located in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT. In 2018 Navantia Australia will open another centre in Western Australia.

Navantia´s productive partnership with the Royal Australian Navy began with the contracts to design the Hobart Class destroyers; and continued with the design and co-manufacture of the Canberra Class LHDs, the construction of twelve LHD landing craft, and the recent contract to build and maintain two Combat Support Ships.

Since being contracted in 2015 to deliver shipyard management services in support of the Hobart Class build, we have met all budget and schedule milestones. This has strengthened our collaboration with the Commonwealth and provides a sound platform to support future Royal Australia Navy programmes.

Navantia Australia has been shortlisted for the SEA 5000 programme to build the 9 future frigates, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the Commonwealth to support the development of Royal Australia Navy capability. In Spain, Navantia’s history dates back to 1730, with the creation of the Ferrol, Cartagena and San Fernando historical military arsenals, dedicated to the construction and repair of Spanish Navy ships.

Delivering Real Capabilities
F-5000 Future Frigate

The F-5000 is Navantia Australia’s offering to the Australian Government’s SEA 5000 Future Frigate program. The F-5000 will be the most capable anti-submarine warfare vessel in the Australian Defence Force arsenal.

These ships will be designed in Australia and built in Australia by Australians and will provide the most advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability to the Royal Australian Navy.

The F-5000 is designed as a modern, advanced ASW frigate that incorporates key systems from the Hobart Class to provide a superior and balanced set of capabilities across the spectrum of maritime tasks. Key elements of the F-5000’s maritime warfare capabilities include:

  • Powerful surface and air-warfare capabilities
  • Advanced above water sensors
  • An advanced underwater sensor suite
  • Flexible air-operations, backed by a low-risk evolution to a two hangar design to provide capacity for an additional helicopter or UAV capability

The F-5000 brings unique commonality and interoperability advantages to the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet which will provide significant advantages in relation to operations, training and through life support.
